Need an Official Record?
Choose the Illinois office based on the record being requested:
- Criminal-history transcript or conviction inquiry: use the Illinois State Police, Division of Justice Services, Bureau of Identification process
- Circuit Court case file: begin with the Illinois court case lookup, then contact the circuit clerk in the filing county for documents or certified copies
- State prison custody information: use the Illinois Department of Corrections Individual in Custody Search
- Sex-offender registration information: use the Illinois State Police Sex Offender Registry and contact the designated local registration agency when needed
- Police or incident report: contact the law-enforcement agency that created the report and follow its Illinois Freedom of Information Act process
- Expungement or sealing filing: use the approved Illinois court forms and file with the Circuit Court that holds the case
- Booking, jail, or county-held record: open the directory of all 102 Illinois counties to locate the proper local route
The Illinois State Police Bureau of Identification is the central state repository, but it is not the clerk for county court files, local jail records, or local police reports. There is no single statewide public counter that can supply every Illinois record type.
